Philip and Renee Greetings!

What a blessing to be able to contact you once again via email.  This system of communication is very effective and we have had many reports of what a blessing it has become to so many of you.  It is also a blessing to us because it costs virtually nothing compared to the paper letters we are sending.

We are also excited to be able to share with you a couple of new features that are not available on paper newsletters.  You will find attached a couple of short 2 1/2 to 3 minute videos.  Just click on the link and you will be taken to the videos.

If you would like to be removed from our snail mail list which will save us valuable resources please send an email to jessica@lighttothenations.org asking her to do just that.  If you would like to continue on our paper newsletter, you are more than welcome.

We consider you our partners in prayer and our investment in communicating with you is very worth while.

Crusade in Drug Lord's Territory
Donna AMrta 2I want to share with you a very controversial outreach we sponsored.  About two months ago a pastor in our pastor's network called me with an ethical question.  He works in one of the hardest and most dangerous slum areas of Rio.  The whole mountain he works and lives in is called "Morro Dona Marta" and is controlled by drug lords.  Anyway, the key drug lord over this area was caught and jailed by the police and his wife and family took charge of the mountain.  They contacted this pastor and asked him to organize a big outreach with all the churches in the area to celebrate the birthday of the drug lord and to pray for him.  They told the pastor that they would pay for the sound system and stage and that he could preach whatever he wanted.  He could even turn it into an evangelistic outreach for the mountain if he so desired.  This pastor called Valdecir called me up, torn between the tremendous opportunity and the possible appearance of condoning the activities of the drug lord.

After much prayer, we decided that it is the sick that need a doctor not the healthy.  Furthermore, the appearance of impropriety was outweighed by the tremendous opportunity to stand before the kings of that region even if they were unrighteous.  I had the pastor check once again that we would be able to preach whatever we wanted.  The answer once more was confirmed and we moved ahead with plans to shake the mountain with a population of over 30,000 people.      We partnered with Jack Harris ministries and were able to pay for food and children's inflatable toys to touch the hearts of the children at the same time.

The event was fantastic.  We had a packed out crowd in the only open area of the mountain.  We were also broadcasted live on the "Illegal" PA system across the whole mountain, guaranteeing that the whole population heard us whether they wanted to or not.  The wife and the family of the drug lord were present and a mountain wide order was sent out to shut down all drug dealing at 6:00pm in order for all their operatives to be present at the event for prayer.  We had many salvations and a tremendous opportunity to pray for the drug lord and his family.  We prayed that the Lord would touch and change his heart and transform the whole family into followers of him.  During the whole event the drug lords security personnel, armed with machine guns, surrounded us.

The GAP Semester Opens
August 27, 20067

New GAP Promotion

As you may know our GAP (Global Apprenticeship Program) will open on August 27, 2007.  We are hoping that this program will become a part of several internship programs in the USA.  We feel that giving an intern attending an internship program in the USA an opportunity to see, feel and understand missions will not only be a huge benefit to the interns but also to the home church.  Please mention to all those you know who might be interested about this program which we believe may be one of the best internship programs for interns interested in missions or in church planting.

Our 5 Year Missions Push

As you know, our focus ever since we came to Brazil has been to raise leaders that plant churches that raise leaders.  With this vision, we have been able to plant over 520 churches in the last 7 years.  In the last 12 months alone we have planted over 172 churches of which 53 we were able to fund for one year through your generous gifts.  In John 21, Jesus gives a strategic word to his disciples which radically changed their effectiveness.  As you will recall they had fished all night and caught nothing, but as they heard and obeyed the Lord by throwing the net on the other side of the boat they went from ZERO to 153 LARGE fish.  What a difference Jesus' word made.

It is interesting to me that they were doing over 90% right, but the other 10% which made all the difference was only understood by faith when they put the Lord's supernatural word into practice.  They were in the right place, at the right time, fishing with the right nets and boat, floating on a sea with hundreds of fish, but they only caught something after the word of the Lord had been obeyed.

We believe that the Lord is sharpening our strategy concerning church planting in Brazil.  I believe that He desires to use you, our partners as part of it.  We believe that real church planting should transform the city.  The church is not just a sign on a building.  For this reason, we feel that the Lord directed us to do an in-depth analysis of Brazil.  Using the latest census data, we unveiled that there are literally hundreds of municipalities (legally incorporated cities) with less that 3% Christians.  These are cities where the gospel as we know it had never been preached and in the vast majority of cases, there is no church whatsoever.  In fact, there are over 6.8 million Brazilians who have no access to the life giving body of Christ that we take so much for granted.   Even if these 6.8 million people were to have an experience with Jesus, they would not be able to gather with any other Christians since there is no church.

When hearing these statistics we felt powerless to tackle these hundreds of cities.  We then further analyzed the census data, limiting the cities to all cities over 10,000 in population.  This narrows the scope down to exactly 153 of the largest cities.  This is the exact number of large fish that were counted in the net of the huge catch in John 21:11.

Please pray for us as we tackle this huge task over the next five years.  We don't want to simply administratively plant 153 churches, but we want to see 153 cities be transformed as the kingdom of heaven arrives in those cities.  We believe this is the last evangelistic mission frontier in Brazil.   Our desire is to:

  • Train a pastor through our Church Planting Seminar, Global Apprenticeship Program and now Bible School at one or our three regional bases in Rio, Aracaju or Salinas.
  • Hold a three-day city impacting event with intern evangelists preaching door to door and in the city squares in each of these interior cities, coupled with evening crusades which will shake the city.
  • Plant and fund a church for one year.

We already have the structure for training in place.  We have already had experience in the crusades having impacted over 12 interior cities with crowds of up to 5,000.  We have already planted over 500 churches.  Please consider helping us with the finances to reach these last 153 unreached cities.  The cost for each city is $10,000.  This includes all the training, evangelism and support for the church for the first year.

We are also believing the Lord to provide us:

  • A Mobile Crusade Unit (MCU) which is a semi-tractor trailer truck converted to a stage and sound system capable of reaching crowds of up to 10,000 people.
  • A Cessna 210 single engine plane to move between these cities since there is no commercial aviation available to any of these cities and car trips range from 20-40 hours from Rio each way.

Prayer Requests

  • Prayer covering for our ministry and three missionary families
  • $200,000 to purchase and remodel the GAP Training campus.
  • $10,000 for each of the 153 cities to cover training, three-day event, and church planting
  • Cessna 210 Airplane costing $180,000.  None of the 153 cities have comercial airports but all have landing strips.  It is a 30 - 40 hour car drive to each of these cities from Rio.
  • Mobile Crusade Unit (MCU) costing $150,000 is an 18-wheeler truck which transforms into a sound, lighting and stage for events of up to 10,000 people.
Renée's Word

Renee

Hello friends and family,

Philip and I have just returned from a visit to the U.S. attending two conferences, visiting friends and family, and making new contacts.  It was good to be back in the good ole US of A, but even better to be back home.  Since our children stayed in Rio with their grandparents, the grace for me to be away from them grew thinner and thinner as our return date got closer and closer.    We found everyone healthy and happy, even the grandparents!

With all of our traveling, I was reminded how today with such modern technology in every area, basic communication is made very simple even for missionaries.  50 years ago dads and /or moms would leave for very long periods of time and not speak to their families for weeks, months and sometimes years.  Let us not forget to be grateful for these "pleasures" in life.  We are able to still remain very connected with our families.  We even spoke and prayed for our church on live video during their church services on Sundays.  God has been very good in these last days.  Let us not become selfish or dependent on comfort in fulfilling God's call for us in these last days.  There are many people who still need to hear the life changing message of the gospel.   Let us remain willing to cross oceans and valleys.  Or maybe God has called you to cross your street or drive across town.  God would never ask too much from us.  After all, He's given us everything.

Keep your vision,

Renee Murdoch
